If the scratches aren't too deep I use 600 grit sand paper and wet sand the gel coat to remove the scratch. Then I wet sanded with 1000 grit sand paper. Then I used a buffer that I bought at Farm and Fleet with some polishing compound, I used Wizards Brand Turbo cut compound, to bring the shine back. My boat turned out great. Star Brite Fiberglass color restorer made a big difference in my boat even before I sanded it. Good Luck.
